And after Ann, I heard there is an awesome documentary about the Iraqi Resistance to US occupation playing at the Rio at 7pm this same night. People should try, (and I am) to go to both events. Should be a great night.

It would be nice if people in positions of power--Neal Coonerty is also Supervisor and was previously City Councilman and Mayor; Scott Kennedy has twice been Mayor of Santa Cruz--also took local action against the war.

Kennedy delayed an initial resolution calling for withdrawal from Iraq and then withdrew it ["Council Kills Meaningful Anti-War Vote by Delay" http://santacruz.indymedia.org/mod/comments/display/3983/index.php]

He opposed any meaningful local response to the Patriot Act, such as Arcata, Palo Alto, and San Francisco voted.

Neither has never publicly taken a stand demanding full disclosure and disinvestment from war profiteers (such as Camp, Dresser, and McKee--see "Desalination and War Profiteering in the City of Santa Cruz" at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2006/09/27/18314697.php and ""Making a Killing in Iraq" comes to Santa Cruz - in more ways than one" at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/24/18449441.php).

While I recognize the achievements of the RCNV (which Kennedy co-founded decades ago) on anti-recruiting efforts and applaud them, I think it's important to see the whole picture.

Returning Vets continue to be harassed, cited, and arrested for violating the Sleeping Ban and other anti-homeless ordinances (many of them introduced and rammed through by then-Councilmember Coonerty in 1994). The Citizen Police Review Board was delayed for three years by Kennedy in the early 90's, and then eliminated with his approval in 2003.

Kennedy was (and unless he's changed his position still is) a high-profile supporter of the "Move-Along" laws prohibiting political tabling for more than one hour in any spot; his expanded "forbidden zone" laws restrict the placement of political tables--actually banning them on virtually every street in town near a building other than parts of Pacific Avenue.

Kennedy supported the original Sitting Ban targeting the homeless (but criminalizing everyone who sits on most of the sidewalk, however non-obstructively) and backed up the massive police riot that broke one man's ribs and made another woman miscarry in May 1994. He refused to convene an open inquiry into the issue thereafter.

More recently he's had activists falsely arrested at City Hall and is named in a federal lawsuit for misusing City Council rules to crush dissent there. The case is currently on appeal.

These actions are relevant to anti-war protesters and vets, particularly homeless vets.

However sincere both these politicians may think they are, one must judge them by their actions when in power--and hold them accountable. Kennedy is not currently in power; Coonerty has a very powerful position. Giving these men forums when they don't use the power of their own offices to support LOCAL anti-war actions weakens the anti-war movement. Particularly when they oppose local anti-war actions and support laws that restrict protest from positions of power.
